The Paragons – \”The Tide Is High\” (Official Audio)

Written and first recorded by Jamaican vocal trio, the Paragons, in 1967, ‘The Tide Is High’ gained international attention 13 years later, when a cover version by the American band Blondie topped the US and UK pop charts.\r
\r
Among later renderings was a similarly styled 2002 version by British girl group, Atomic Kitten, which also made Number One in Britain, but for Jamaican music fans, the original remains the seminal cut.\r
\r
Penned by the group’s three members, John Holt, Tyrone Evans and Howard Barrett, the original cut, recorded at Duke Reid’s famed Treasure Isle studio in Bond Street and featuring musical backing by ‘White Rum’ Raymond along with Tommy McCook’s Supersonics band, saw issue in Jamaica on the producer’s shortlived Trojan label, while in the UK it was released by Graeme Goodall’s Doctor Bird Records on its Treasure Isle subsidiary.\r
\r
In 1970, the recording provided the backing for a DJ cut by celebrated toaster, DJ, while later in the decade, legendary Jamaican singer recut a version for producer ‘Prince’ Tony Robinson, although it is Blondie’s hugely successful 1980 rendering of the song that is best known worldwide.\r
THE TIDE IS HIGH LYRICS
Written by John Holt, Tyrone Evans and Howard Barrett
The tide is high, but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one
I’m not the kind of man who gives up just like that
No, oh
It’s not the things you do that really hurt me bad
But it’s the way you do the things you do to me
I’m not the kind of man gives up just like that
No, oh
The tide is high but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one
Number one, number one
Every man wants you to be his girl
But I’ll wait my dear ’til it’s my turn
I’m not the kind of man who gives up just like that
No, oh
Every man wants you to be his girl
But I’ll wait my dear ’til it’s my turn
I’m not the kind of man who gives up just like that
No, oh
The tide is high but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one
Number one, number one
The tide is high but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one
Number one, number one
The tide is high but I’m holding on
I’m gonna be your number one
Number one, number one

Alton Ellis – \”You’ve Made Me So Very Happy\” (Official Audio)

Cowritten and first recorded in 1967 by Brenda Holloway, ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’ became the singer’s third Top 40 pop single, when the single reached Number 39 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 40 on the Billboard R&B singles chart.\r
\r
Covered by 1969, Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1969, the song became one of the US pop group’s biggest hits, reaching Number 2 on the American Billboard Hot 100 in April and 35 in the UK the following month.\r
\r
Further versions of the song include interpretations by Holloway’s fellow Tamla performers, Edwin Starr & Blinky, Chris Clark, the Temptations, the Miracles, the Hearts of Stone and Diana Ross, while Bobbie Gentry, Cher, Lou Rawls, Sammy Davis Jr., Mina, Shirley Bassey, Gloria Estefan and Julian Ovenden have also covered the number.\r
\r
By the time Alton Ellis recorded his soulful version at Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle studio in Bond Street, Kingston in 1970, the singersongwriter was firmly established as one of the island’s most celebrated artists, having enjoyed numerous ska, rock steady and reggae hits over the preceding decade.\r
\r
Alton also cut the song for Reid’s main rival, Clement ‘Coxson’ Dodd, but it is the Treasure Isle cut that remains his seminal interpretation of the composition.
YOU’VE MADE ME SO VERY HAPPY LYRICS
Written by Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson and Berry Gordy
Wahoohwahooh, woooo
Wahoohwahooh, woooo
I’ve lost at love, at love, at love before
Got mad and I closed and I closed and I closed the door
And you say try just once more
And you came and you took control
You touched my very soul
You’ve always shown me that
Loving you is where it’s at
You’ve made me so very happy
I’m so glad you came into my life
The others were untrue
But when it came to loving you, now
I’d spend my whole life with you, girl
‘Cos you came and you took control
You touched my very soul
You’ve always shown me that
Loving you is where it’s at
You’ve made me so very happy
I’m so glad you came into my life
Wahoohwahooh, woooo
Wahoohwahooh, woooo
I’ve lost at love, at love, at love before
Got mad and I closed and I closed and I closed the door
And you say try just once more
And you came and you took control
You touched my very soul
You’ve always shown me that
Loving you is where it’s at
You’ve made me so very happy
I’m so glad you came into my life
Wahoohwahooh, woooo
